I was inspired to start S A Y A because I wanted to establish a way I could create a direct link between giving back to the planet I love, whilst expressing my creativity. Through S A Y A we are creating excitement around issues we believe in by creating things people can treasure that have stories to tell. We hope to invite others to get involved directly with environmental and wildlife conservation.
When researching environmental issues in Indonesia, I felt like I had opened a bag of worms, I began to understand the scale and complexity of the work that needs to be done. I knew I wanted to be a part of it and see the direct impact myself so I continued my research into sustainable forestry to see what I could do. After visiting organisations, I partnered with a company called Gaia. Gaia was a deeply moral rainforest focused NGO, that I came across who works directly with famers and communities to protect their ecosystems and supports endangered tree species.
I started S A Y A as a business to create a responsibility. I not only wanted to give back, but connect people wanting to directly make an impact. I came across the group of sculptors from Java who where digging up root wood from old plantations, left behind by loggers. Circular business models always made so much sense to me but I had never thought of starting one.
These pieces of waste offcuts from these roots matched as a perfect fit to something small, functional and unique. I had worn hairsticks for many years and had made a few for myself so they happened to be at the forefront of my mind. I thought about how it would be something you use everyday and what a great talking point it would be!
I loved the idea they would be able to tell stories about issues that are happening on the other side of the world. I wanted them to become functional daily reminders of our commitments to our beliefs. Symbols of our passionate protests to put our planet first.
Inspired by nature and handmade by Balinese artisans, S A Y A Designs is a brand new heart fuelled venture launching a unique collection of hairpins. Using root wood salvaged from old plantations, each hairpin completes an amazing cycle, as every purchase plants up to 10 endangered tree species back into the rainforests in Indonesia.
Having successfully completed our Kickstarter campaign, we have planted over 1,512 endangered tree species back into rainforest area’s. We would love for you to join us in our ongoing celebration between people and planet.
